Germany issues health warnings as toxic blue algae spread in Baltic Sea and lakes

Toxic blue algae blooms are spreading across the Baltic Sea and various lakes in Germany, prompting health warnings and swimming bans. Satellite imagery from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency shows extensive clusters of cyanobacteria along the coast between Rostock and the island of Hiddensee, extending toward the Danish coast.

In the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, authorities warn that these organisms can produce toxins causing allergic reactions, skin and mucosal irritation, nausea, and vomiting. In Schleswig-Holstein, swimming bans have been implemented in several lakes, with restrictions expected to last until at least Wednesday. Experts advise against swimming if the water is so murky that feet cannot be seen below knee level, and warn that small children should avoid playing in shallow water.

In Bavaria, the situation is also being monitored. In the Aichach-Friedberg district, the Tychonema algae species has been detected in several lakes, including Kissinger Weitmannsee and Afrasee 2. While lakes are not fully closed, officials advise against swimming with small children and dogs. Warm temperatures and nutrient-rich waters are cited as primary drivers for these rapid blooms.
