Germany IT job market shifts as AI and declining entry-level roles reshape industry
The German IT job market is undergoing significant structural shifts driven by artificial intelligence and a decline in entry-level opportunities. According to a Bitkom survey, the shortage of IT professionals in Germany has decreased to approximately 79,000, down from 149,000 in 2023. Despite this reduction, 78% of companies report a continued lack of skilled talent, with 97% of firms facing recruitment difficulties due to language barriers and skill mismatches.
AI is increasingly being used to address these labor gaps. While 85% of companies have not yet laid off IT staff due to AI, 35% of firms that have reduced or plan to reduce positions stated that AI is replacing roles that were previously difficult to fill. Furthermore, 61% of companies expect AI to take over routine tasks, and 55% anticipate a decrease in traditional entry-level positions.
Data from the job portal Indeed corroborates a sharp decline in junior roles. Entry-level job postings in Germany have dropped by more than two-thirds since 2022. The IT sector has been hit particularly hard, with job openings for beginners in IT applications and solutions falling by 77%. Other sectors such as marketing and project management have also seen significant declines, while healthcare and hospitality remain the only major areas showing growth.
