Germany launches €30 million funding for international hydrogen projects

Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has launched its third funding cycle to support the global development of renewable hydrogen facilities. The program aims to promote German technologies in international industrial production, prepare new markets, and establish secure import supply chains.

Eligible companies must be based in the European Economic Area or Switzerland and maintain a subsidiary or branch in Germany. However, projects must be implemented exclusively outside of European and Swiss territories. Selected companies can receive grants of up to €30 million per investment for the 2027–2030 period, subject to the approval of the 2027 federal budget.

The initiative targets medium-sized enterprises, including technology suppliers and project developers, to test innovative solutions globally. Supported sectors include the production of renewable hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and green steel. Previous energy portfolios supported by the ministry include projects in Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia.
