Germany launches ASA emergency alert system for DAB+ radio

Germany is implementing a new emergency alert feature for DAB+ digital radios known as the ASA system. This technology allows radios to automatically receive and display safety messages during disasters, even if internet connectivity is lost.

The new nationwide warning channel, ASA DE, was launched on September 3 on the first federal DAB+ multiplex in channel 5C. Compatible devices are designed to automatically switch to this channel and can even be woken from standby mode during an emergency.

To utilize this feature for the upcoming national warning day on September 10, users with ASA-compatible hardware must manually configure their devices. This involves entering a 12-digit area code obtained from the official ASA website, selecting the DR Deutschland (5C) transmission channel, and activating the ASA DE service.
