Germany launches e-waste recycling campaigns and mobile collection pilots
Germany is conducting nationwide action weeks to promote the proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) under the campaign title ‘Every plug counts! Germany collects e-waste!’. The initiative, supported by the Stiftung Elektro-Altgeräte-Register, aims to increase recycling rates for devices that are no longer repairable. Proper disposal is critical because e-waste contains valuable raw materials such as silver, copper, aluminum, and rare earths, but also hazardous substances like mercury and lead that require professional handling.
In Bielefeld, the local environmental service (UWB) is piloting a mobile collection concept to support these efforts. An e-waste collection mobile will stop at 13 different locations throughout the city until early November. During this test phase, citizens can drop off almost all electrical devices—including televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and energy-saving lamps—free of charge and without restrictions on quantity or size. This pilot project aims to relieve local recycling centers and reduce fire risks caused by improper disposal in household waste.
