Germany launches 'Summer of Vocational Training' campaign to boost apprenticeships
From June to September 2026 Germany will start a nationwide "Summer of Vocational Training" campaign that runs until 2029. Backed by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs and the Central Association of German Crafts, the initiative targets young people at risk of not attaining a qualification, especially in regions such as Schleswig‑Holstein where the share of 20‑34‑year‑olds without a vocational diploma has risen sharply. The program emphasizes early outreach, language support, career guidance and the expansion of secondary schools that provide clear pathways to dual apprenticeships.
At the same time, recent court rulings have tightened requirements for documenting working hours, breaks, overtime and vacation entitlements. Employers must implement precise time‑tracking systems that integrate shift planning, approval workflows and payroll to avoid legal risks.
Advice for prospective apprentices includes personal networking, avoiding AI‑generated application materials, attending local job fairs, keeping options open across multiple trades and arriving well‑prepared for interviews. These tips aim to help candidates navigate a competitive apprenticeship market that currently sees more applicants than available positions.
