Germany launches new maternal support and mental health initiatives

New community initiatives are launching in Germany to support maternal health and mental well-being during and after pregnancy.

In Bernau, the Netzwerk Gesunde Kinder Barnim Süd has established the ‘Kugel-Café’. Starting in November 2026, this monthly program provides a space for pregnant women to network, share questions, and receive guidance from professionals, including a doula, in a relaxed environment.

In the Freyung-Grafenau district, a three-part initiative has been introduced to address postpartum depression, which affects an estimated 10 to 15 percent of mothers. Under the patronage of District President Dr. Olaf Heinrich, the program includes a specialist conference for professionals, a free online seminar, and a monthly support group called ‘Kraftkreis’ held at the Freyung multigenerational house. These services are designed to provide both professional training and direct peer support for those experiencing mental health crises.
