Germany launches Week of Loneliness to strengthen community ties

In Berlin, the Unionhilfswerk is marking a "Week of Loneliness" with regular activities such as a senior sports group that meets every Tuesday, followed by coffee and conversation. The programme highlights how reliable, face‑to‑face encounters can counteract feelings of isolation and improve health and wellbeing.

In the neighbouring Kreis Steinburg, a "Week of Togetherness" is scheduled for 11‑20 September 2026. A planning group that includes the local health office invites clubs, fire brigades, schools, libraries and other organisations to run simple events – from neighbourhood picnics to open‑air choirs – that foster interaction across ages.

Both initiatives aim to make loneliness a visible public‑health challenge and to create low‑threshold opportunities for people to belong to a community.
