Germany leads potato imports to Poland amid European drought concerns

Data from the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) shows that Poland imported 88,810 tons of potatoes in the first half of 2026, with a total value of 140.53 million PLN. This represents a significant decrease compared to previous years; for instance, imports were nearly halved compared to the first half of 2025. Germany remains the leading supplier, accounting for approximately 44% of the total import volume, earning 47.65 million PLN from these transactions.

Simultaneously, the German potato industry is facing challenges due to prolonged drought and extreme temperatures reaching 40°C. These conditions have hindered tuber development and reduced the availability of large-caliber potatoes, which are essential for the French fry production industry. In addition to weather-related damage, a reduction in total cultivation area in Germany and other European countries is expected to limit supply, potentially driving up market prices.
