Germany license plate study suggests expanding regional prefixes

A study by the University of Heidelberg, utilizing data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, has identified 'FDB' (Friedberg) as the most popular license plate prefix among vehicle owners in Bavaria. This trend reflects a sense of local patriotism and a preference for historical identifiers over current administrative district codes.

Economist Ralf Borchert suggests that Germany's landscape of vehicle registration prefixes could expand significantly. He proposes introducing new identifiers for 320 German cities and municipalities with populations exceeding 20,000. While Germany currently utilizes approximately 700 location codes, Borchert believes that expanding these options could serve as both a tool for local identity and a form of regional advertising.
