Extreme summer heatwaves have caused significant economic losses across Europe, totaling an estimated 113 billion euros in reduced GDP, according to assessments by Allianz. The highest economic impact was recorded in Italy with a 28 billion euro loss, followed by Germany at 25 billion euros and France at 20 billion euros. These losses stem from decreased worker productivity, longer breaks, and increased absenteeism due to high temperatures.

In Germany, lightning activity has also been tracked by the company Nowcast. So far in 2026, Germany has recorded 1,056,200 lightning discharges. While this is significantly higher than the record low of approximately 720,000 discharges in 2025, it remains about 15 percent below the ten-year average. June was identified as the month with the highest number of discharges. The strongest lightning strike of the year was measured in Schiffdorf, Lower Saxony, reaching a current strength 21,000 times higher than a standard 16-ampere household socket.
