Germany limits school‑car accident insurance to direct routes

In Germany the statutory student accident insurance protects pupils when they are driven to or from school by parents or other persons. The coverage, however, applies only while the vehicle follows the direct route between home and school. Any private detour – for example a stop at a bakery – creates a gap in insurance protection until the direct school journey resumes.

According to Jan Kemperdiek, a lawyer and regional representative of the traffic‑law working group of the German Lawyers Association (DAV), the insurance coverage is restored as soon as the direct route is continued. If parents merely pick up additional children, forming a car‑pool, the insurance remains in force for all passengers.

The guidance is issued ahead of the new school year, as many families rely on “parent taxis” to navigate the heavy morning traffic around school gates.
