Germany loses over 1,000 historical monuments in two years
The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz has reported that at least 1,077 historical monuments in Germany have been irretrievably lost over the past two years, averaging more than one per day. This finding is detailed in the foundation’s ‘Schwarzbuch’ (Black Book).
Foundation head Steffen Skudelny noted that while monument protection is often mischaracterized as a powerful or obstructive lobby, the actual struggle to preserve protected buildings is frequently hopeless. The organization cited weakened laws and competing priorities as major threats. Eva Masthoff, head of communications, stated that the situation for monument protection in Germany has worsened.
Key reasons for the loss of these structures include economic unfeasibility, neglect, uncoordinated construction measures, fires, and vandalism. The report highlights several specific cases, such as the demolition of the 17th-century ‘Untere Linde’ inn in Oberkirch and the ‘Haus Kern’ in Berlin-Zehlendorf, which was demolished despite being placed under monument protection in 2023.
