Germany lowers breast cancer screening age to 45
The Joint Federal Committee, Germany's highest decision-making body for statutory health insurance, has decided to lower the age limit for breast cancer mammography screening.
Previously, the program was available to approximately 14.5 million women between the ages of 50 and 75. Under the new rules, women aged 45 to 49 will also be eligible to participate, potentially expanding coverage to an additional 2.5 million women.
A transition period is planned to facilitate the changes. If the decision is not legally contested during its review by the Federal Ministry of Health, the new rules are expected to take effect on August 1, 2027. At that time, eligible women may begin self-registering for appointments, with personal invitations expected to be sent out starting in January 2028.
