Germany extends border controls through March 2027

Germany has extended its land border controls, which are now scheduled to remain in effect until at least March 15, 2027. The measures, aimed at curbing irregular migration and enhancing public security, involve random checks of documents, luggage, and travel purposes by the Bundespolizei at various crossings, including borders with Poland, France, and others.

To mitigate the impact on European supply chains, the German government has implemented a national monitoring system to track freight transport and detect potential disruptions. While the European Commission noted in June 2026 that no severe or lasting delays exceeding 30 minutes had been recorded due to congestion, significant traffic jams persist at key crossings, such as the A12 at Frankfurt (Oder) and the A4 at Görlitz.

Separately, migration trends between Germany and Central and Eastern Europe are shifting. Data from the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) indicates that in 2025, Germany saw a negative migration balance with nine countries in the region, totaling a deficit of 37,000 people. This reversal is most notable with Poland, where the migration balance dropped from a surplus of 17,000 in 2023 to a deficit of 13,600 in 2025, attributed to Germany’s declining economic attractiveness and improving conditions in neighboring states.
