Germany: Majority of citizens demand more pressure on Israel
A majority of German citizens believe the federal government should exert more pressure on the Israeli government to influence its policies, according to a Forsa poll conducted for RTL and Stern.
Specifically, 58 percent of respondents support increased pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration. This support is consistent across both West (59 percent) and East (57 percent) Germany. Support is notably higher among supporters of the Green Party, where 75 percent favor a tougher stance, and among CDU/CSU and SPD supporters, at 67 percent.
Conversely, 33 percent of Germans, primarily supporters of the AfD, believe no additional pressure should be applied. The survey comes amid international criticism of Israeli policies in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, particularly regarding the rhetoric of Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. While Germany has traditionally been cautious in criticizing Israel due to historical responsibility, the federal government has shown openness toward sanctions against Ben-Gvir, following similar measures taken by Ireland, France, Spain, and Slovenia.
