Germany: Majority of youth support ban on influencer ads for unhealthy food

A Forsa survey commissioned by the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (VZBV) reveals that 57 percent of young people aged 14 to 25 in Germany support a ban on influencers advertising unhealthy foods.

The study indicates that influencer marketing is highly effective despite high awareness; while 87 percent of respondents claim they can easily recognize social media advertising, 40 percent reported purchasing at least one food item based on an influencer's recommendation.

Ramona Pop, a board member of the VZBV, argued that current labeling requirements are insufficient because influencer marketing embeds products into personal stories and seemingly authentic routines. The VZBV is calling on policymakers to prohibit the advertising of foods high in sugar, fat, or salt that do not meet World Health Organization (WHO) nutritional criteria for children, particularly when the content targets a predominantly young audience.
