Germany economy shows mixed recovery amid export shifts and low water levels

Germany's economy shows mixed signals as it navigates a period of recovery and structural challenges. In the first half of 2026, German exports rose by 3.9 percent to 817.8 billion euros. However, key markets like the United States and China showed weakness, with US exports of vehicles and parts dropping by 17.2 percent. China remains the top trading partner, followed by the US and the Netherlands.

Industrial performance remains a point of focus. Real orders in the manufacturing sector rose by 0.8 percent in June compared to May, a 9.3 percent increase year-over-year, driven largely by electronics and mechanical engineering. Conversely, the hospitality sector faced a downturn, with real revenues falling by 5.2 percent in the first half of the year due to declining consumer demand.

The Deutsche Bundesbank warned that low water levels on major waterways like the Rhine, caused by drought, could temporarily slow economic recovery in the third quarter by increasing transport costs and delaying deliveries. Additionally, high energy prices and inflation continue to weigh on private consumption. While the economy is on a recovery path, investment remains cautious, with many companies citing financing difficulties or lack of demand.
