Germany marks International Literacy Day with educational initiatives

International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8, is being marked in Germany through various educational and social initiatives. The day, established by UNESCO, highlights the importance of reading, writing, and arithmetic for social participation and professional opportunities.

In Spandau, local organizations are raising awareness for adults with low literacy skills. The Volkshochschule Spandau offers free courses, while the Lerncafé Spandau provides a supportive environment for practicing everyday tasks like filling out forms. Additionally, the Spandau Alphabet Alliance, including the district central library, offers workshops and reading events to support both children and adults.

On a national level, the German Bridge Association (DBV) is promoting the card game bridge as a unique form of learning. The association describes bridge as a “language” with its own vocabulary and grammar that requires concentration and logical thinking. To encourage lifelong learning, the DBV is offering introductory courses across more than 400 clubs in Germany.
