Germany modernises 22 apprenticeship occupations from August 2026

Germany is overhauling its dual vocational training system. In Bavaria, school law changes will pave the way for the modernisation of 14 apprenticeship occupations, with a new education centre under construction in Freising slated for completion in 2029. The reforms aim to provide legally‑secure documentation and smoother transitions between training stations.

At the national level, the new training year begins on 1 August 2026 with 22 modernised dual apprenticeships, including 19 newly‑structured construction occupations. The Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB) coordinated the update, involving more than 60 industry experts and BIBB research director Prof. Hubert Ertl. The changes embed sustainable building, digitalisation and modern work processes into the curricula, seeking to secure skilled labour and support Germany’s infrastructure and energy transition goals.
