Germany approves new Hannover-Hamburg high-speed rail line

The German Bundestag's transport committee has approved a plan for a new high-speed railway line between Hannover and Hamburg. This decision aims to resolve chronic congestion on one of Germany's most critical north-south transport axes. The project includes the construction of a new track to increase capacity and reduce travel times by approximately 18 minutes, while also providing roughly 250 million euros in additional investments for improvements to the existing line by 2034, such as enhanced noise protection and operational upgrades.

In conjunction with this specific project, the Federal Ministry of Transport has introduced the 'Infraplan 2026-2030'. This new five-year strategic planning instrument is designed to increase transparency and reliability across the entire German rail network. The plan covers essential areas including track renovation, digitalization, electrification, and station modernizations. To ensure accountability, the government will use eight key performance indicators to monitor progress and allow for adjustments if targets are not met. While the Infraplan is welcomed for providing better planning security, some industry representatives have called for more concrete commitments regarding long-term financing.
