German Volksbanken expand into cryptocurrency trading
German cooperative banks, specifically Volksbanken, are increasingly expanding their services to include cryptocurrency trading, such as Bitcoin and Ether. According to a survey by the Genoverband involving 196 institutes, 6 percent of these banks already offer crypto services, while an additional 26 percent plan to launch solutions within the next five months.
Ultimately, 59 percent of the surveyed institutes are expected to offer cryptocurrency trading to customers within the next two years. This strategic shift aims to attract younger, digitally-oriented customers and counter rising competition from neobanks and foreign financial institutions. Michael Hoeck, chairman of the Genoverband, noted that the banks must remain attractive to avoid losing this growing market segment to competitors that may offer higher-risk products.
The services are primarily intended for self-directed investors. While the move signals a shift from specialized platforms toward traditional banking structures, experts continue to warn of high volatility and the risks associated with speculative assets.
