Germany nursing home costs rise to 3,364 euros monthly

Nursing home costs in Germany are rising, placing significant financial pressure on residents and their families. According to data from the Verband der Ersatzkassen (VDEK), the average monthly out-of-pocket expense for residents in their first year of care reached approximately 3,364 euros in July 2026, an increase from 3,108 euros in July 2025.

These personal costs consist of several components: the care portion, accommodation and food, investment costs (covering facility maintenance and modernization), and training costs. While long-term care insurance provides subsidies, they often do not cover the full amount, leaving a substantial gap. This has sparked political debate regarding reform, including potential income-dependent contributions and full coverage models.

Other aspects of the care system include the use of care allowance (Pflegegeld), which is paid to individuals with at least care level 2 to support home care; this money is not considered taxable income and does not affect pension claims. Additionally, alternative living arrangements like care-based shared apartments (Pflege-WGs) are available, which receive specific subsidies to support communal living and professional assistance.
