Germany retirement and tax planning advice

Financial experts and the Federal Association of Tax Assistance Associations (BVL) are highlighting several key considerations for retirement and parental leave planning in Germany.

Regarding retirement, individuals utilizing the ‘Aktivrente’—which allows for up to 2,000 euros monthly tax-free for those continuing to work after reaching the standard retirement age—are advised to apply for updated income tax prepayment notices. Failing to do so may result in overpaying taxes until the next assessment.

Furthermore, for the more than 20 million employees using occupational pension schemes (bAV), experts warn against choosing a lump-sum capital payout. Because these payouts are treated as taxable income in a single year, they can trigger significant tax progression, making monthly pension payments a potentially more tax-efficient option.

In the context of parental leave, financial experts suggest that even with reduced income, maintaining small investment contributions, such as ETF savings plans, is vital to avoid losing long-term market growth and compound interest benefits.
