Germany infrastructure: Major highway and bridge closures announced

Several major roadworks and structural repairs are causing significant traffic disruptions across Germany.

On the A4 near Gummersbach, a new barrier system will be installed at the Wiehltalbrücke starting October 26 to prevent trucks exceeding 44 tons from crossing the aging structure. This installation will lead to various closures of the Gummersbach and Bielstein junctions and sections of the A4 through late November.

In Berlin, the Rudolf-Wissell-Brücke on the A100 remains partially closed due to a damaged tension link. External experts are investigating the structure, with results expected in mid-November.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the A1 near Cologne will face a 56-hour full closure between Erftstadt and the Bliesheim highway interchange from November 6 to November 9. This is part of the replacement construction for the Merowingerstraße bridge, which was demolished following an accident in 2022.

Additionally, the L597 near Mannheim-Wallstadt will undergo full closures over two consecutive weekends in late October to facilitate repairs on an overpass spanning the A6.
