Germany Open Monument Day 2026 features thousands of sites
The Open Monument Day, organized by the German Foundation for Monument Protection since 1993, will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Under the theme 'NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur', more than 6,500 historical sites across Germany will open their doors to the public, offering access to spaces that are typically restricted.
In the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, 40 monuments are participating, with 28 located in the city of Saalfeld. Activities include tours of castles, churches, and industrial sites, as well as nostalgic rides on vintage buses.
In the Palatinate region, sites such as the Old Cotton Mill in Speyer and the City and Fortress Museum in Germersheim will offer specialized programs, including archaeological workshops and family-oriented activities. In Gießen, the Untere Hardthof association will host guided tours of a former brewery complex dating back to the 1840s, featuring views of Jugendstil facades and historic brewery cellars.
