Germany hosts Open Monument Day at over 6,000 sites
More than 6,000 historical monuments across Germany are opening their doors to the public for the annual ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (Open Monument Day). Coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, this year’s event focuses on the theme ‘NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur’ (Networks: Monuments & Infrastructure), highlighting structures that facilitate social and technical connectivity, such as industrial sites, bridges, and transport systems.
Participating sites include a wide array of locations, from the Ellenfeld Stadium in Neunkirchen to the historic brewery in Gießen and the industrial energy factory in Knappenrode. In Bamberg, the central opening event will feature over 50 accessible monuments. Other regional highlights include tours of the German Electricity Museum in Recklinghausen, the historic lighthouse in Hamburg, and various cultural sites in Thuringia and the Palatinate.
Most activities, including guided tours, concerts, and exhibitions, are free of charge, though some specific programs may require advance registration. The event serves as a major cultural showcase, providing rare access to private or industrial heritage sites that are typically closed to the general public.
