Germany opens first high‑tech truck weight‑control station on A4 near Düren

A pilot weight‑control station for trucks has been put into operation on the A4 Autobahn between Aachen and Cologne, near Düren. Equipped with sensors that scan the weight of passing lorries in real time, the system displays the licence plate on LED boards and directs drivers of suspiciously heavy vehicles to an exit for inspection. A dedicated weighing lane then determines the exact load. The facility, commissioned after just over a year of construction, is the first of an intended 16 stations to be built across Germany. Stefan Schnorr, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, said the site was chosen because the A4 carries large freight volumes from the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam and lies close to the Köln‑Eifeltor container hub.

The automated approach eliminates the need for personnel to wave down trucks, aiming to reduce overloaded vehicles and improve road safety and logistics efficiency.
