Germany: Opposing demonstrations planned for October 7 anniversary

On October 7, 2026, two distinct demonstrations are scheduled to take place in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, marking the third anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel.

In Düsseldorf, a broad coalition of approximately 40 organizations and associations has organized a rally in front of the city hall to protest against antisemitism. The event, which has received the patronage of Mayor Stephan Keller, aims to address the rising tide of Jewish hatred in Germany and Europe. Organizers stated the protest is a peaceful response to recent incidents, such as an attack on a Jewish man in Düsseldorf, and seeks to support democracy and human rights.

Simultaneously, in Duisburg, the 'Aktionsgruppe Palästina' has called for a gathering on Königstraße. This group frames the event around the concept of Palestinian resistance and the historical context of the conflict, citing a right to resistance under international law. Unlike the Düsseldorf rally, the Duisburg call for assembly does not explicitly condemn the murders or hostage-taking associated with the October 7 attacks.
