German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has ordered mandatory military reassignments to fill critical staffing gaps in Panzerbrigade 45, a permanent German armored unit being established in Lithuania. The measure comes as the Bundeswehr struggles to meet recruitment goals through voluntary service alone, particularly in specialized fields such as information technology, logistics, and combat support roles.

While approximately 80 percent of the brigade's positions are currently filled by volunteers, the ministry noted that several hundred personnel may be subject to compulsory transfers to ensure the unit's operational integrity. These reassignments, which could involve up to 1,000 soldiers, are expected to begin as early as this autumn. Affected personnel will have the legal right to challenge these transfer orders.

The deployment is a strategic response to the heightened security landscape in Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, aimed at bolstering NATO's eastern flank. Berlin intends for the brigade, which will also include 200 civilian employees, to reach full operational readiness by the end of 2027. Permanent locations for the unit include Rudninkai and Rukla in Lithuania.
