Germany-origin used car fraud targets Czech and Slovak markets
Fraudulent practices involving used vehicle imports from Germany are targeting consumers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Criminals exploit the reputation of German automotive maintenance to sell vehicles with falsified origins, tampered odometers, or undisclosed accident histories.
In the Czech Republic, approximately 19 percent of the 148,312 used cars imported last year originated from Germany. In Slovakia, German-origin vehicles accounted for roughly 41 percent of the 41,662 individual imports during the first eight months of this year. Experts estimate that a significant percentage of these vehicles may have never been registered in Germany or were only registered there briefly to create a false sense of quality.
This issue is linked to organized crime networks. For example, a ten-member gang recently apprehended in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, was linked to 37 stolen vehicles valued at approximately 1.3 million euros. These vehicles, stolen in countries including France, Italy, Spain, and Hungary, were processed with forged documents in Germany to be sold as legitimate German imports in Eastern Europe.
