Germany's Minister Katherina Reiche proposes financing for gas reserve
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy plans to create a strategic gas reserve of 24 billion kilowatt‑hours – roughly ten percent of the country’s storage capacity – to be ready for crisis situations by 2027. The reserve was originally to be funded by a levy on gas customers, but Minister Katherina Reiche said the financing question is open. Energy‑price portal Verivox estimates the total build cost at about €1.5 billion, with an annual household cost of roughly €42 for a typical 20 000 kWh gas consumption plus €5 operating expenses. The earlier suggested consumer levy would have been 29–36 cents per megawatt‑hour, lower than the former gas‑storage levy.
