Germany outlines safe child bike transport and cycling fitness advice

German traffic regulations require children to be carried only in approved devices on bicycles. The road traffic code stipulates that cyclists must be at least 16 years old, and on a single‑track bike only one child may be transported, while a bike trailer can carry up to two children up to the age of seven, with exceptions for disabled children. Approved child seats must meet DIN EN 14344 standards and include harnesses, footrests and back support; bike trailers must comply with DIN EN 15918 and provide safety belts and lighting. Load‑carrying cargo bikes without dedicated safety equipment are not permitted for child transport.

Separately, sports experts advise that regular cycling is an effective whole‑body workout that improves cardiovascular health, muscle strength and calorie expenditure. Depending on intensity, cyclists can burn several hundred calories per hour, supporting weight management and reducing the risk of heart disease. Riding is joint‑friendly and can be sustained for longer periods than running, making it suitable for beginners and those with joint issues. Experts recommend building endurance by cycling for at least half an hour to an hour and ensuring proper hydration and nutrition during rides.
