European traffic and parking regulations trigger fines and legal clarifications
Drivers in Europe face various regulatory pitfalls regarding parking and traffic enforcement. In Germany, supermarket parking lots are increasingly monitored by automated camera systems. These private spaces operate under civil law contracts, where violations—such as parking before store opening hours or exceeding time limits at electric vehicle charging stations—can result in fines ranging from 15 to 60 euros. Consumer protection groups have criticized some providers for using illegibly small text on signage.
In Braunschweig, a driver was fined 20 euros for using a pink parking disc, which violated strict German regulations requiring a specific blue shade (RAL 5017) and specific dimensions according to DIN 6171.
In Italy, the Court of Cassation has clarified rules for contesting extra-urban speed fines. To ensure drivers have adequate time to react to speed limit changes, speed control devices must be placed at least one kilometer away from a sign indicating a lower speed limit on extra-urban roads. On highways, the minimum distance between speed measurement devices must be four kilometers.
