Germany real wages rise 1.5% in Q2 2026 amid pension adjustments

In the second quarter of 2026, real wages in Germany rose by 1.5 percent compared to the previous year. This growth follows a 1.8 percent increase in the first quarter. Nominal wages grew by 4.1 percent during the same period, while consumer prices increased by 2.5 percent. Notable nominal wage increases were seen in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors (+8.9 percent), energy supply (+7.6 percent), and financial services (+7.5 percent).

Regarding the pension system, the German statutory pension insurance faced a deficit in 2025, with expenditures reaching 426.5 billion euros against revenues of 422.6 billion euros. To manage this, reserves are being utilized. However, pensions are set to increase by 4.24 percent on July 1, 2026, due to positive wage developments. Projections for 2027 suggest a further increase of approximately 4.4 percent.

Additionally, the construction industry reported a 6.0 percent rise in real orders in June 2026 compared to May 2026. Discussions regarding future pension reforms continue, including potential increases to the retirement age to address demographic shifts.
