Germany plans major pension and social security reforms for 2027
Germany is facing significant shifts in its social security and pension systems. Proposed reforms include coupling the retirement age to life expectancy, which could see the standard age rise between 2031 and 2041. Additionally, the Alterssicherungskommission has recommended ending the ability to retire without deductions after 45 years of contributions.
In the realm of family support, the ‘Mütterrente III’ reform will increase child-rearing credits for children born before 1992 from 30 to 36 months starting in 2027. Meanwhile, the Nursing Care Reorganization Act (PNOG) aims to integrate respite care into new service budgets rather than abolishing it.
Financial adjustments are also looming. The income threshold for mandatory health insurance is expected to rise to 84,150 euros in 2027. For private savings, a new retirement savings depot (AVD) will launch in 2027, offering state subsidies of up to 540 euros annually and becoming accessible to the self-employed.
However, these changes face political and economic hurdles. Several German states are opposing the centralization of pension insurance providers. Furthermore, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung has warned that a planned one billion euro reduction in federal subsidies for the 2027 budget could increase pressure on pension contribution rates.
