Germany to launch new state-subsidized retirement depot in 2027

Germany is set to reform its private pension system starting January 1, 2027, with the introduction of the Altersvorsorgedepot (AVD). This new system is designed to replace the traditional Riester-Rente, offering more flexibility through investments in ETFs, equity funds, and bonds.

Under the new regulations, the state will provide direct subsidies, including up to 540 euros annually for contributions and an additional 300 euros per child. Eligible annual contributions range from 120 to 1,800 euros. Existing Riester contract holders will have the option to transfer their accumulated assets into the new AVD system.

Financial institutions are already preparing for the transition. Deutsche Bank has announced its entry into the market, offering both digital ETF-based solutions and more expensive advisory-led products. Bank manager Raffael Gasser emphasized that the institution will avoid loss-leader strategies to ensure long-term customer transparency. However, concerns remain regarding price competition, as the law allows providers to increase fees with four months' notice.
