Germany pension system requirements and point calculations

In Germany, the minimum requirement to qualify for a regular old-age pension is typically five years of pension insurance coverage. However, the monthly amount received depends on the individual's salary history and the total number of pension points accumulated.

The German pension system is based on income-related points. An employee earning the average annual salary earns exactly one pension point per year. For the current year, the average gross annual salary corresponding to one point is 51,944 euros. Following a recent increase of 4.24 percent, the value of a single pension point is 42.52 euros per month.

For example, an individual who has earned the German average for five years would accumulate five points, resulting in an approximate gross monthly pension of 212.60 euros. This figure is a rough estimate and does not account for potential increases or decreases. To receive these benefits, individuals must also reach the required age limit, which is gradually increasing to 67 years.
