Germany: Pensioners benefit from tax automation and discount opportunities
Pensioners in Germany can benefit from various cost-saving measures and administrative simplifications regarding their retirement status.
Regarding taxation, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) has noted that a formal certificate regarding received pension amounts is no longer required for income tax returns. Since 2019, relevant data has been transmitted directly from the pension insurance to the tax authorities. This automatic transfer eliminates the need for retirees to manually enter data into specific tax forms, though the certificate remains available for free via online services if individuals wish to calculate potential refunds using tax software.
Additionally, the pension ID serves as a tool for accessing discounts. While there is no nationwide uniform entitlement to senior discounts, retirees can save money on culture, leisure, and local transport by proactively presenting their pension ID and inquiring about age-related tariffs at venues such as theaters, swimming pools, and railway services.
