Germany permits 60 km/h speed for reimported Simson mopeds

The German federal government has decided to allow reimported Simson mopeds to travel at speeds of up to 60 km/h, matching the regulations for vehicles originally registered in the former GDR. This decision aims to end the previous unequal treatment of these vehicles.

Under the new ruling, reimported mopeds qualify for the special protection status established by the Unification Treaty, provided they were first put into circulation by February 28, 1992. Previously, many of these reimported models were restricted to a maximum speed of 45 km/h, despite being technically comparable to models registered within the former East Germany.

The announcement followed a meeting in Gera between East German transport ministers and federal representatives. Thuringia's infrastructure ministry and various political factions in the state welcomed the decision as a practical solution and a victory for Simson enthusiasts.
