Germany pet care services may qualify for tax deductions

In Germany, certain pet care costs can be claimed as tax deductions under specific conditions. While routine expenses like food, veterinary visits, and toys for private pets are generally not deductible, pet care services provided within the home may qualify as household-related services.

According to the Bund der Steuerzahler, services such as feeding, grooming, or dog walking can be tax-deductible if they meet certain criteria. A ruling by the Federal Fiscal Court (Bundesfinanzhof) established that dog walking services qualify if the dog is picked up from and returned to the pet owner's home.

Eligible taxpayers can deduct 20 percent of these costs directly from their income tax, up to a maximum of 4,000 euros per year. To qualify, owners must provide an invoice and use non-cash payment methods; cash payments to pet sitters are not eligible for the deduction. Notably, services provided at external locations, such as pet hotels or boarding kennels, do not qualify for this specific tax relief.
