Germany plans billion-euro investment in AI and supercomputing

The German government plans to significantly increase funding for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence. Between 2023 and 2025, the federal government provided approximately 290 million euros to support the expansion of public supercomputers. Looking ahead to 2029, plans involve investing roughly one billion euros, specifically to support the development of an AI Gigafactory in Germany.

To meet growing demands for AI applications, the government intends to expand computing capacity for science and industry. This includes the commissioning of new computers at AI Factories in Jülich and Stuttgart, as well as new GCS supercomputers in Munich and Stuttgart, both expected by 2027.

Regarding cybersecurity, the government stated it does not currently see a threat to German encryption methods due to China's leadership in exascale computing. It emphasized that following the recommendations of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) regarding secure cryptographic algorithms ensures safe communication.
