Germany plans legislative changes to accelerate fiber and mobile expansion
The German government has introduced a draft amendment to the Telecommunications Act (TKG) aimed at accelerating the expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks. Key components of the proposal include the creation of a ‘Gigabit Register’ to centralize infrastructure data for planners and network operators, as well as the removal of hurdles regarding internal building cabling to align with European regulations.
The legislation also focuses on managing the transition from legacy copper networks to modern fiber optics, ensuring a fair migration process that maintains uninterrupted service for consumers. The first reading of the bill in the Bundestag is scheduled for October 9, 2026.
In the context of increasing fiber adoption, hardware such as the FritzBox 5530 Fiber is becoming more relevant. This router features an integrated modem compatible with AON and GPON networks commonly used in Germany. While it offers high-speed LAN connectivity, it lacks a USB port and has more limited wireless and telephony features compared to premium models.
