Germany plans mandatory first‑day sick note for workers

The German government is discussing a law that would require employees to present a doctor’s certificate of incapacity on the first day of illness, ending the practice of phone sick notes. The proposal aims to reduce workplace absenteeism and reinforce social‑security benefits.

Actress Eva Mona Rodekirchen, speaking to t‑online, said she does not find the measure problematic, adding that “we have to go to the occupational doctor” and that it is “not difficult”.

Employer reactions are mixed. The Catholic facilities group KERN trusts employees and sees no need for stricter rules, while the Dorsten‑based Stiftsquelle has required a first‑day certificate for years. Arvato’s representatives are cautious, noting that details of implementation are still unclear and that any regulation must be practical for both companies and the health system.
