Germany plans new funding for democracy projects in Saxony-Anhalt
The German Federal Ministry of Education intends to fund democracy projects in Saxony-Anhalt through channels outside of the restructured “Demokratie leben” program. A spokesperson for Minister Karin Prien stated that local democracy work is a high priority for the ministry and that new funding opportunities will be developed for providers and projects across all states and municipalities.
The initiative aims to ensure that civic engagement and advisory services can continue even if support from individual states or municipalities ceases. This follows concerns raised by Elisabeth Kaiser, the Federal Government Commissioner for East German Affairs, who noted an increasing threat to civil society actors in the region. Kaiser highlighted that civil society in Saxony-Anhalt is historically weaker in terms of personnel and finances compared to western Germany.
Additionally, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media has pledged continued support for cultural institutions and creators in Saxony-Anhalt, regardless of potential changes in the state government.
