Germany plans purchase of 16 Airbus A400M transport aircraft

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is planning the multi-billion euro purchase of 16 new Airbus A400M transport aircraft. During a visit to the Airbus plant in Bremen, Pistorius stated that his ministry is in advanced discussions with the manufacturer to upgrade the Bundeswehr's fleet.

Currently, the Bundeswehr operates 53 A400M aircraft, but 16 of these are configured only for logistical missions and lack the necessary missile defense systems for tactical combat operations. The proposed plan involves acquiring 16 new machines specifically designed for tactical use, while selling the existing logistical models to partner nations. This move is intended to address the current security situation and could secure industrial capacity and jobs at the Bremen Airbus site. The procurement remains subject to approval by the Bundestag.
