Germany updates housing and long-term care social benefits

Germany is implementing several changes to social welfare and care benefits. Regarding housing assistance (Wohngeld), payments for September 2026 are scheduled to be transferred on August 31, 2026. This support is aimed at low-income households, including both renters and homeowners, to mitigate rising living costs.

In the healthcare sector, a new monthly subsidy of 450 euros has been introduced for individuals in specific communal living arrangements under care levels 1 through 5, effective January 1, 2026. This requires a specific care contract under § 92c SGB XI.

Furthermore, proposed reforms to long-term care insurance (Pflegeneuordnungsgesetz) suggest that by 2027, traditional care money (Pflegegeld) may transition into a relief budget. While the Federal Ministry of Health indicates the new budget amount could be higher, it would be earmarked for specific purposes such as care aids and replacement care, potentially limiting the flexibility previously enjoyed by families.
