Germany welfare updates: Grundsicherungsgeld payments and Wohngeld reforms
Germany is undergoing significant shifts in its social welfare landscape. The 'Bürgergeld' has been replaced by 'Grundsicherungsgeld' as of July 2026. For the October 2026 payment cycle, recipients can expect funds to be available by Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as benefits are typically paid one month in advance.
Regarding housing assistance (Wohngeld), several updates and future changes are noted. For 2026, households with disabilities may benefit from an annual income deduction of 1,800 euros. Additionally, if a household's income drops by more than 10 percent during a current approval period, they may apply for an increased allowance.
Looking toward 2027, the German government has proposed three major reductions to Wohngeld: suspending the regular biennial adjustment for inflation and rent increases, halving the permanent heating cost component, and altering the calculation formula. The Federal Council has expressed concerns regarding the potential social hardships these changes may cause.
In a separate legal development, courts in Marburg, Halle, and Stuttgart have ruled that certain reductions in basic services for asylum seekers were unlawful. The courts determined that the 'protection of vested rights' clause must be applied, requiring authorities to maintain previous payment levels if new calculations result in lower amounts.
