Germany pledges €130 million for Sahel food‑security partnership

State Secretary Niels Annen announced that Germany will allocate €130 million to the Sahel‑Resilience Partnership, with €120 million earmarked for the World Food Programme and UNICEF. The funding, slated for 2026, aims to strengthen integrated approaches to agricultural transformation, water supply and youth opportunities across Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. The initiative is part of the “Berlin Process for Food Security in the Sahel”, coordinated by the German Development Ministry (BMZ) together with regional partners and UN agencies such as WFP, FAO, IFAD and UNICEF.

The program seeks to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities, promote sustainable agriculture and provide alternatives to young people, thereby reducing the appeal of extremist groups in the region.
