Germany: Expert predicts potential change in Chancellery leadership

Political consultant Karl Jurka predicts a potential change in German leadership, suggesting that Friedrich Merz may no longer serve as Chancellor by Christmas. Jurka cites Merz’s recent political errors, including a speech regarding reform policy following state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as key factors making the current status quo unsustainable.

Jurka outlines three possible scenarios for the political landscape: a change in party leadership while Merz remains Chancellor, a broader replacement of both party and government leadership across the Union and SPD to reset policy direction, or new elections. He notes that new elections are a last resort due to the potential for an AfD victory.

Regarding potential successors, North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst is viewed as having an advantage over Bavarian counterpart Markus Söder. The primary obstacle for Söder is the difficulty of convincing the CDU base to accept a Chancellor from the CSU. A leadership change could occur through resignation or a constructive vote of no confidence, provided coalition partners reach an agreement on new figures.
