Germany faces critical September elections amid shifting political tides

Germany faces a critical electoral cycle this September, with key votes scheduled in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seen a significant surge in popularity, positioning itself as a leading force in several eastern states. The party has grown to nearly 75,000 members and recently reaffirmed the leadership of Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla during its national congress.

In Berlin, the political landscape presents a different trend. Elif Eralp, the candidate for the post-communist Die Linke party, has emerged as a frontrunner in recent polls for the upcoming September 20 elections. Her campaign focuses on populist measures, including the expropriation of housing from investment funds and the establishment of a network of affordable public canteens. Current polling suggests Eralp could lead with up to 22% of the vote, placing her ahead of both the CDU and the AfD in the capital.
